I thought my summer was going to fizzle out with the rain. I take all of my annual leave off in June as it’s the quietest time for me. Not much going on at a football club in June, players and management on holiday, transfer window opens in July so crack on and catch some rays, mother nature (who I have to say has ‘had one’ as far as I’m concerned of late) soon put the kibosh on that, cheers love.
Having applied for a summer placement with the BBC in London and not heard anything I’d planned to remain in Leicester and feed on the scraps offered in these lean months. That was until I received a phone call informing me I’d got the job, great, what am I doing exactly? Other than go for an 11 mile run one day because ‘the rings were calling me’ – Doofus. Yes I know the picture looks a little strange but I was a self shot whilst hangin’ somewhat so please allow me a degree of latitude.
The glamour of the Olympic Games was a huge lure although I have to confess, the whole ’London’ thing had never really grabbed me, didn’t get it, it’s a city, so what.
I worked on a joint project between the BBC and Japanese Broadcaster NHK. Super Hi-Vision is the future of TV, my role was to watch the pictures of the greatest show on Earth come in, direct the Japanese editors (I learnt 4 phrases and won a bet against a German Japanese speaking translator that GB would win more medals, touch) lots of overnight shifts and very little down time, that said, our capital has left its mark.
There was just something about the place, always on the go, at the heart of the biggest sporting event in the world and to just be there was great. I didn’t go to experience the Olympic Games, I was there to work hard, that said I did get a taste of some live action and it was mind-blowing, unique and unforgettable.
I met some great people having assumed (yeh yeh, I know, ass, you, me blah blah) most Londoners were miserable Tube catching folk who looked at this Northern lad with distain as I said hello in the morning. Not to be put off, I stepped up my game and followed in the footsteps of the GamesMakers from London 2012, carrying pushchairs down the stairs and even pointing people in the right direction, I was on a one-man mission to improve the atmosphere of these underground worms full of grumpy chaps who think they’re big dogs.
There may have been a few memorable nights out, trips on a Thames Clipper, a watering hole or two and a chance to take in some of the sights (although have you ever been to M&Ms World? Wow, I spent about £20 on chocolate coated peanuts in there, crazy) in our wonderful capital City. Would love to have seen the Opening or Closing Ceremony live if I could, a chance to catch Sir Paul or Baby Spice (my favourite) would have been the icing on the Bakewell for me.
All over now though and back to being a sport monkey which is great. Learnt a lot from the project and the City, thanks for keeping me safe London but Leicester is home. A little sad to leave but hey, it is what it is…………
